After many years without surgical services, Balimo Hospital is once again opening its doors to patients in need of surgery through a strong and life-changing partnership.

This important milestone brings renewed hope to families in Balimo and surrounding communities, where access to surgical care has long been limited. Through close collaboration, shared commitment, and a united vision, the hospital is now better equipped to manage surgical cases and improve health outcomes for people who previously had very few treatment options.

Partnership Restores Surgical Services

A strong partnership began last year between ECPNG and SDP, working alongside the Western Provincial Health Authority (WPHA) to restore and strengthen surgical services at Balimo Hospital. This collaboration has already led to important upgrades to the operating theatre, including:

    • Installation of air conditioning
    • Supply of essential equipment such as blood pressure machines and vital signs monitors
    • Improved gas connectivity
    • Ongoing work toward full theatre functionality

These developments highlight the power of partnership in restoring essential health services in rural Papua New Guinea.

Strengthening Diagnostic and Support Services

In addition to improvements in the operating theatre, the hospital laboratory has been upgraded with important biomedical, biochemistry, and GeneXpert equipment. These upgrades are helping to strengthen diagnostic services and support better patient care.

Further support has come through portable X-ray services made possible by the visiting WPHA SCROP team from Daru Provincial Hospital.

ECPNG extends sincere thanks to SDP, the Western Provincial Health Authority, Delta Fly District Development Authority, and FRPG for their valuable partnership and support in making this progress possible.

A Major Step Forward for Healthcare in the Region

The reopening of surgical services marks a major step forward for healthcare delivery in the region. It reflects the value of working together to strengthen hospitals, restore essential services, and ensure that more Papua New Guineans can receive the care they need closer to home.

Growing Medical Capacity at Balimo Hospital

It is also an exciting time for Balimo Hospital, with its first three Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) now stationed at the facility. The hospital is also hosting three fifth-year medical students from Griffith University and James Cook University, supported through SDP.

In addition, two medical officers from SDP are currently supporting the hospital’s medical team, alongside two Health Extension Officers (HEOs) and two midwives.

Expanding Care Through the SCROP Program

The Western Provincial Health Authority’s SCROP program is also making a significant impact at Balimo Hospital through the establishment of a PMDT site to begin MDR-TB treatment in Balimo.

This will enable the hospital to receive and care for patients from surrounding BMU sites across the Delta, Middle Fly, and South Fly Districts of Western Province, bringing critical treatment closer to the communities that need it most.
